Many thanks to all who have shown such kind concern over the plight of poor Oscar. For now he is just eating and sleeping, nothing else, but nothing else is required of him. He is being medicated and his wounds are being attended to. He is still completely unresponsive but it’s early days yet.
Several people have asked if we know the story behind how he came to be in such a bad state. Unfortunately we can only speculate. His ears are horribly mutilated and so infected at the moment that it is impossible to assess the damage. The only thing we can say with any certainty is that the damage was intentional. It has not been caused by accident or by another animal.
Very short ears on a pit bull can be a sign that the animal was intended for dog fighting.
All animal lovers are horrified by the very thought of dog-fights, but dreadful though they are, far worse in our opinion is the ‘training’ that would-be fighting dogs have to go through. Dog fights are dog against dog; fighting dog training is dog against man, with the dog put in a position where he is unable to defend himself. I am not going to go into details, suffice to say, their training starts young and it is brutal in the extreme. The ’successful’ fighting dog will become aggressive and ready to maim or kill. The ‘unsuccessful’ dog will become, like many a victim of torture (whether human or animal) either cowering and terrified or a creature without hope. These unsuccessful fighting dogs will then either be inhumanely killed or turned out onto the streets to fend for themselves.

Is this Oscar’s story? Only Oscar knows for sure. It is however just one story of man’s inhumanity against creatures that we, as dog lovers know, will return every ounce of love that you show them and who will be loyal to their loving owners until the very end. Possibly like Oz with his machete wounds, Aurelia with her slit ears, Angie who was covered in spray paint graffitti and so many, many more, Oscar’s wounds were simply someones idea of ‘fun’.
Today when you stroke, cuddle and play with your own beloved pet, please spare a moment’s thought for those poor lost souls, wandering alone, without food, water, or a place to call home.

this makes me absolutely sick. i’m so thankful for PPS, and all of those who help PPS, for the care of all of these beautiful babies.

I agree!! This makes me sick to my stomach. I’m praying for a recovery and a loving home for Oscar!
Great Read. I’ll look forward to your next article
I am not sick at all.. Although very very inhuman .
It shows me the extreme { Resilience } of the breed and dogs in general. This dog ,like some of us in life have been thru the trenches. TO do this well and be loving towards anything or anyone is a testiment to a strong spirit. One that endured the worst and came out scared , loving and strong..

You blog entry most definitely was one of the best points of my Saturday. I was on MSN searching for something totally unrelated when the post caught my attention. I’m glad I took the time to read your blog! Feel free to comment on my blog at Singorama Review!
That is absolutely terrible! Poor poor Oscar, it’s so upsetting to see him like that, how anyone can do that to a dog is beyond me. I think the Peanut shelter is so amazing for looking after him.
wishing Oscar the speediest recovery possible x

How is Oscar doing? Is he still unresponsive? Hopefully not since he’s playing with toys… Would love an update on his health ~ both his wounds and emotions.
Oscar is doing well – such a sweetheart! A very special Oscar update is coming very soon!
Thank you for helping this poor thing. It makes me cry, it makes me angry because for those found and helped, how many aren’t? And those helpers with the biggest hearts are the ones with the smallest wallets, usually, while those in far greater positions to make a substantial impact never seem to think about pitching in to help the animals. I have 6 rescues and feed seven more outside. With help, I rescued a cat colony of 14 ferals, cleaned them up and adopted them out. The people who lived nearby simply shrugged, “Oh, there have always been cats there. Some get sick, some get hit by cars…yawn.” I don’t think I have ever felt as disgusted to be a human as when I heard that. Did it never occur to ANYONE, anyone at all with half a brain cell, that there was something deeply wrong about the situation? Guess not.
Love to Oscar and a heartfelt prayer that he will find a permanent, loving home and have a long life in which to enjoy it.
I, too, would adopt them all, if I could: no matter what the temperament, no matter what the appearance, they are all beautiful to me.
Debra, you clearly have a big heart. Unfortunately while there are so very many kind and caring people in the world, the not so kind and not so caring seem to tip the balance. Like you, we have found that those with the most disposible income are the ones that are most scared to use it to do real good. Perhaps because they feel they would be giving and getting nothing in return. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you look into the eyes of a previously suffering animal that is now safe – that feeling is worth more than gold. For us, every day is a struggle to survive financially. There is nothing ‘extra’ and sometimes we wonder if we’ll make it through another month…..but we always do, thanks to the generosity of those truly enlightened souls.
Many people consider crate training puppies can be bad. The thought of crate training is to get the pup to hear your own instructions. That can be for their own saftey, yet most of the time its helpful to test their own compliance and demeanor. Your first step in crate training ought to be to look for the most effective place for your pups dog crate. Imagine the particular thought associated with by using a crate would be to allow your puppy his or her own place, plus get your pet accustomed to the idea of being away from all your family members. However must also allow him to see whats happening.
