Our latest PPS rescue is Oscar the Pit Bull who arrived today. Named for the extremely kind man who has been feeding him and who alerted us to his plight, Oscar is a truly sad case. He is hungry, he has mange, fungus, open sores and parasites. His ears have been cropped so short as to be almost non-existent. Worst of all, Oscar has given up hope. Look into his eyes and you will see no sign of suffering, pain, discomfort or distress, there is simply…..nothing. He is not aggressive or resistant. He is not friendly or loving. He neither accepts or rejects affection. He is simply existing, a hollow shell of an animal.
Rescue and rehabilitation is our passion. We don’t care how long it takes to make an animal strong and healthy. We will keep battling until we succeed, only giving up if the animal is truly suffering. There is a line between normal discomfort while recovering and true suffering and it is so important to know where and when to draw the line.
At this moment in time, we badly need a sponsor or two to help us make Oscar well again.
Oscar’s wounds will heal. We will worm him, medicate him and love him, but will we heal his soul?
Only time will tell.

I will wrap him in the safe yellow light after yoga, when I am most centered.
Thank you susan
I wished I had read this before we finished the e-newsletter. I want to help. We had a pit and I have a soft spot for them. If you still need help I will highlight him in our feb issue. Also let me know how I can help sponsor him and how much.
Hope you and Andy are doing well. I’ll let you know when I am coming next time and hopefully the rains won’t keep me away.
Hugs.
Thanks Lydia – it would be great if you could highlight him in your Feb edition. We will be doing updates as his condition (hopefully) improves.
There is no ‘how much’, we are grateful for whatever we get, every $ helps!
hope to see you agin soon. Jen
He’s been miserable for so long that shutting down was his only way to cope. Hopefully as his mange and parasites are treated and he sees he’s consistently safe and loved he will regain the happy, clownish nature that makes pit bulls so beloved by responsible owners. I think his loss of that hurts my heart more than his poor ears and medical needs. I’ll be donating and mentally pulling for him and am so grateful you exist so he has a place to heal and learn what life should really be.
Thank you so much for your kindness – it’s very much appreciated. I think he is a dog that is going to need to time and we will give him as long as he needs.
have you received help for this dog, do you need cross posting done and where is the dog-what state? My heart breaks looking into his eyes
Oscar is currently at Peanut Pet Shelter. We are hopeful that he may go into foster care soon as he really needs some one to one attention. We have today received some very kind donations towards his care. We would like to raise as much as possible for him as we anticipate it will take a long time to get him back to full health and strength.
I took in a dog w/out the fungus mange etc but hopeless. I tied him to my waist and made him follow me everywhere for a week. Slowly, he revived into the balanced sheep dog we needed.
How can I help?
Hi Sarah
Oscar is just one of many, many sad cases that we see in this part of the world. Obviously donations are what we need most but we understand that not everyone is in a position to give, so whatever anyone can do to spread the word and raise awareness is a huge help. Please visit our website http://www.peanutpetshelter.org to find out more on how to help. Our recent article (which will be sent out as a newsletter soon from this site) called Moving forward into 2010 explains about workplace sponsorships which costs you and your work colleagues just $1 per month.
Will he be put up for adoption?
Hopefully he will eventually be well and strong enough to be put up for adoption. How far in the future that will be is impossible to tell at this point It is unlikely that he will go up for general adoption, it will be more a case of adopting him out if the perfect person appears.
I can’t wait to hear more about the workplace sponsorship program. i am positive i can get some of my coworkers on board (my boss does a lot of local shelter/rescue volunteering here in chicagoland).
Dear ShelterJen,
Clearly, you are a gentle, strong, kind, and loving human being. I am indescribably grateful to know you’re in that part of the world for Oscar and others who so badly need the help you’re able to give them.
My Dog, I wish Mexico weren’t so far from Maine. I’d be there in an instant to pitch in whatever logistical help I could give, and I’d add to the force of decent humanity committed to ensuring that Oscar’s life, from now on, will be filled with nothing but love, safety, and comfort.
I will continue to work for animal welfare in my neck of the woods, not only for those who need it here, but for Oscar — and you. And I will follow your story here, looking forward to “after” photos showing Oscar’s growing health and happiness. (I have to say that in that last photo, I see a glimmer of hope in Oscar’s posture.)
Please know that supportive energy is being projected out to you and Oscar from Maine.
With deep gratitude and admiration,
Lisa
Very many thanks for your kind words Lisa – they are very much appreciated. We can all only do what we can to help and I am pleased and proud to be getting to know so many caring people like yourself. animals know when they are loved and hopefully Oscar will start to feel the love soon!
Is he perking up at all?
He wagged his tail this morning for the first time!!!
That is great that he wagged his tail. Would you perfer my donation be sent to TX or through paypal? I know PP take a % of donation right? Sorry it will not be as big as donation as Oscar deserves, but every little bit helps right?? Blow him a kiss for me.
Mary
Thank you for your kindness Mary. Whichever method you prefer is fine with us. Please know how much it is appreciated!
How is Oscar doing? He is always in my thoughts and prayers.

Oscar is a little stronger every day. There are some issues with his skin. We have a visiting vet who is going to do some investigations early next week.
Shame on you for creating another terrific post! Awesome stuff, keep up the good work. I see a lot of potential!
Thank you for your kind words!
