PPS Pet Of The Day – Becky

posted by:

Becky is our PPS Pet of the day. She is a two and a half year old Jack Russell terrier mix. Becky has been with the shelter for a year now and she would love to have a new, loving, forever home of her own! She is very tiny…..perfect to take back to the U.S. or Canada as carry-on!

Sola

posted by:

This is little Sola. I found her yesterday lying at the side of a dusty road in El Ejido with her head resting on an empty beer bottle. She is around three and a half weeks old and weighs just nine ounces.

She won’t drink from a bottle and hates being syringe fed, so she is currently mastering the art of drinking without drowning!

PPS Pet of the Day – Wendy

posted by:

Beautiful Wendy is one of the shelter’s long term residents as she has been with us since 2008. She has the sweetest, gentlest nature and the most gorgeous eyes. Because she is so quiet, she is usually overlooked. We hope that one day someone will give Wendy the very special, loving, forever home that she so richly deserves.

Many, many thanks to all of you for your kind emails, Facebook posts, prayers, good wishes and positive vibes for little Angelo.

Sadly, Angelo slipped away during the night.

Although in our heart of hearts we knew this pup was probably a lost cause from the start, we felt that he needed someone to make sense of his existence. The situation here with regard to street dogs is sometimes so bad that we have to accept that for each success story there will be a dozen or more failures.

All our animals are very special to us, but sometimes one comes along that just touches you so deeply, you will do anything to breathe life into them. Angelo was one of these. To see an an animal sick and starving is bad enough, to see one sick, starving and living in absolute fear is beyond words. As much as he needed food and medication, this little boy needed love. Although I knew he was dying, for one day and one night I thought I could work a little bit of magic…..sadly, I was wrong.

PPS Update

We found this little boy wandering the streets this morning (Wednesday). He is a tiny poodle in truly horrible condition. He is so emaciated, he doesn’t have the strength to stand, his tiny body is covered in sores and he possibly has pneumonia. He is 5 months old and weighs just two and a half pounds. He undoubtably has internal parasites but at present is just too weak to de-worm. He is refusing to eat or drink, so has been started off on subcutaneous fluids and I am now syringe feeding him tiny amounts every two hours – so a sleepless night or two ahead!

As yet I haven’t given him a name as in all honesty I think his chances of survival are limited. I will keep you posted on his progress.

Our pregnant mother gave birth one week ago to 7 beautiful puppies. Photos coming soon – at the moment Mom is being very protective!

Last week too saw the arrival of 3 tiny kittens in need of bottle feeding. They are currently in the care of foster mom Roz and won’t be ready for adoption for another few weeks yet.

The purpose of the Peanut Pet Shelter Clinic will be to provide free spay and neuter for the animals of those local people who otherwise would not be able to afford this service.
Many wonderful vets and associations already provide this at certain times of the year. It is intended that the Peanut Pet Shelter Clinic will provide this service on a permanent basis.

The site will also be a learning center for veterinarian students.

We have been contacted by North American veterinarians and veterinarian educational establishments who would like to help with spay/neuter and to research, with their students, diseases and parasites particular to this part of the world.
We feel it would be extremely beneficial to the shelter, community and visiting students, to provide a learning facility.
Peanut Pet Shelter needs assistance to make this a reality – a project that could potentially save and enhance the lives of thousands of animals and provide a unique learning experience for many students who want to work in the veterinary field.

Updates and latest video

In the last couple of weeks we have had many adoptions. Those adoptions have included several adult dogs, some of which had been here since puppies. We had begun to wonder if they would ever find loving, forever homes of their own in spite of being simply delightful animals. Juliette, Ben, Maria, Louisa and Dizzy have been part of our lives for so long, the shelter somehow doesn’t seem the same without them. How wonderful though that they have all found their own ‘people’ to love and be loved by in return.

Juliette Ben Maria Louisa Dizzy

Our younger adoptions include, Ceiba the kitten and puppies: Squirrel, Una, Leika, Linzi, Tulum, Mickey and Bonnie.

Mickey Bonnie

Last and by no means least, Gizelle, Biscuit and Chorizo

Gizelle Biscuit Chorizo

You may recall that both Biscuit and Gizelle were part of our 15 dog rescue operation and Chorizo is the little dog we saved from the government pound. How amazing to see how far all three of these dogs have come and that now they are receiving the love they deserve. These three dogs are all such characters and although we didn’t have the pleasure of their company for long, they are all very much missed for the joy they brought into our lives.

Tomorrow too, will see the departure of Kitty who will be leaving for her new home in North Carolina. We send Kitty to our wonderful friend and ardent PPS supporter Kelly, with our love and hopes for a bright future.

NEW ARRIVALS!!!

Reba – a little girl rescued by supporter and fellow Brit, Rebecca, and a litter of 4 puppies rescued by two kindly Mexican gentlemen from the side of the highway, just outside Cancun.

Many thanks to PPS Board members Linda and Rick for a great new video. We hope you enjoy it!

A Dog’s Purpose

posted by:

Many thanks to Trish for this charming story – it came at just the right time. There is a message here for all of us!

A Dog’s Purpose (a 6 year old’s point of view)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ‘I know why.’

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, ‘People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life – - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?’ The six-year-old continued, ‘Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.’

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!
